What Is an Oral Cancer Screening?
An oral cancer screening is a fast and comfortable exam where we check the soft tissues of your mouth—tongue, lips, cheeks, gums, and throat—for any unusual changes.
During your appointment, we’ll look for signs like:
- Sores that don’t heal
- Red or white patches
- Lumps or thick areas in the mouth or neck
- Difficulty chewing or swallowing
- Numbness or unexplained pain
If we notice anything concerning, we’ll let you know right away and may recommend further evaluation or a biopsy. Early action can make a big difference, and we’re here to guide you every step of the way.
Why Are Oral Cancer Screenings Important?
Oral cancer can affect anyone, and in many cases, it develops without obvious symptoms. Screenings help us detect issues in the beginning stages —often before they become painful or noticeable.
Identifying oral cancer before it progresses gives patients a better chance of successful treatment, and it’s one of the easiest things you can do to stay on top of your health.
How Often Should You Get Screened for Oral Cancer?
Most adults should be screened once or twice a year during a regular dental checkup. If you or a family member has certain risk factors—such as tobacco use, heavy alcohol use, or a history of HPV—we may recommend more frequent exams.
Kids and teens are usually at lower risk but are still checked during routine visits.
Can Oral Cancer Be Prevented?
While no one can completely prevent oral cancer, you can lower your risk by:
- Avoiding tobacco products
- Limiting alcohol
- Practicing good oral hygiene
- Staying consistent with dental visits
