What Is Nitrous Oxide Sedation?
Nitrous oxide—commonly known as laughing gas—is a safe and effective way to reduce anxiety and help patients relax during dental treatment. It’s a colorless, odorless gas that’s mixed with oxygen and gently inhaled through a small mask placed over your nose.
Within a few minutes, you’ll feel calmer, maybe a little light, but always awake and aware of your surroundings.
Once your treatment is finished, we turn off the gas and allow you to breathe pure oxygen, which clears the nitrous oxide from your system quickly.
Who Might Benefit from Nitrous Oxide Sedation?
Nitrous oxide is a helpful option for:
- Teens who feel anxious or fidgety during dental visits
- Adults with dental phobia or past negative experiences
- Patients with a sensitive gag reflex
- Individuals undergoing longer procedures
- Anyone who simply feels nervous about treatment
Will You Be Unconscious While Sedated?
Nitrous oxide is a form of minimal sedation, which means you stay awake and can respond to your dentist or hygienist throughout the procedure. You’ll feel relaxed, but never unconscious.
How Long Do the Effects Last?
One of the benefits of nitrous oxide is how quickly it works and wears off. After your treatment, the effects fade within minutes of stopping the gas. Most patients feel completely normal shortly afterward and can safely return to their daily routines—sometimes even driving themselves home.
Is Nitrous Oxide Safe?
Yes, nitrous oxide has been safely used in dentistry for over a century. It’s well-tolerated by both teens and adults and is administered in a carefully controlled environment by trained professionals.
We’ll always review your medical history beforehand to make sure it’s the right fit for you or your children.
