What Is a Dental Inlay?

A dental inlay is a custom-made restoration used to repair a tooth that has been damaged by decay or wear. It fits neatly inside the grooves of a tooth, restoring its strength and appearance without covering the entire surface.

While fillings are applied directly to the tooth and shaped during the visit, inlays are made outside the mouth—typically in a lab—then bonded to the tooth. Inlays offer a more precise fit and are often more durable, especially for chewing surfaces.

When Do You Need an Inlay?

You may need an inlay if a cavity is too large for a regular filling, but the damage doesn’t require a full dental crown. Inlays are also a great option when an old filling needs to be replaced or when you want a more natural-looking alternative to metal fillings.

What Is the Process for Getting an Inlay?

An inlay is typically completed over two visits. During the first, we’ll gently clean out the decay, take impressions of your tooth, and place a temporary restoration. Your custom inlay will then be created to match your tooth’s shape and color.

At your second visit, we’ll carefully bond the inlay into place and make sure your bite feels comfortable.

How Often Do Inlays Need Replacements?

Dental inlays are built to last, especially when paired with good brushing habits, flossing, and routine checkups. Many last well over a decade.
