Understanding Gum Disease
Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is a chronic infection of the gums and bone that support your teeth. It begins with plaque buildup and can progress silently if not treated at its earliest stages.
Left unchecked, gum disease can lead to gum recession, bone loss, and even tooth loss.
Common signs of gum disease include:
- Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing
- Red, swollen, or tender gums
- Persistent bad breath
- Loose or shifting teeth
- Gum recession or teeth that appear longer
- A change in how your teeth fit together
If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important to schedule an exam right away.

What Is Periodontal Maintenance?
Once gum disease has been diagnosed and treated, often with a deep cleaning called scaling and root planing, regular periodontal maintenance visits are essential.
Maintenance goes beyond what’s done during a standard dental checkup. They remove plaque and tartar from below the gumline, help prevent reinfection and allow our dental team to monitor your gum health over time.
How Often Should You Schedule Periodontal Maintenance?
Your dentist at Guiding Light Dental will recommend a personalized schedule, but most patients benefit from visits twice or three times a year. Each check-up allows us to manage bacteria levels and catch any signs of trouble early, before more serious treatment is needed.
Is Periodontal Maintenance Uncomfortable?
Most patients find periodontal maintenance visits very manageable. If you experience sensitivity, we offer sedation options to help you stay comfortable during your appointment.
